SWADS is an award-winning peer support group, run by and for people with lived experience of mental health.

Since 2013, we have welcomed hundreds of people from across South Wales looking for support from those who understand what it’s like. They are proud to be a local, independent, peer-led community that helps make a big difference in people’s lives.

mental health support groups like the South Wales Anxiety and Depression Group (SWADS) stand as crucial pillars of community well-being. Recognising the unique challenges and experiences of individuals across this region grappling with anxiety and depression, SWADS offers a vital network of peer support that can significantly enhance mental health. This regional focus allows for a deeper understanding of local contexts and shared experiences, fostering a stronger sense of belonging and mutual aid.

One of the most significant benefits of a regional mental health support group like SWADS is its ability to connect individuals who may share similar cultural backgrounds, local challenges, and access to regional resources. For someone living in a specific town or village within South Wales, knowing that they are connecting with others from nearby areas can foster a greater sense of community and shared identity. This can be particularly important in addressing the potential stigma associated with mental health, as seeing others from their own region openly seeking and offering support can help to normalise conversations around mental well-being within the local community.

Furthermore, SWADS acts as a valuable hub for the exchange of information relevant to the South Wales region. Members might share insights into local mental health services, NHS provisions in the area, or community-based initiatives that can offer additional support. This regional knowledge sharing can be incredibly empowering, helping individuals navigate the often-complex landscape of mental health resources within their locality. It can also facilitate access to services that might be particularly tailored to the needs of the South Wales population.

The power of shared experience is amplified within a regional context. Individuals within South Wales may have experienced similar economic shifts, social changes, or cultural nuances that can impact mental health. Sharing these experiences within the supportive environment of SWADS can lead to a deeper level of understanding and validation. Hearing from others who have navigated similar regional challenges while managing their anxiety or depression can provide a unique form of encouragement and hope, fostering a sense that they are not alone in their struggles within the specific context of South Wales.
