A warm welcome to Rethink Mental Illness Manchester support group, a dedicated community space designed to foster connection and shared understanding for those navigating the complexities of mental health. This initiative is entirely managed and led by a committed team of local volunteers, ensuring that the support provided is grounded in authentic, lived experience. While the group is independently run by its members, it remains officially registered with and fully supported by the national Rethink Mental Illness organisation. The core objective of our meetings is to offer a safe, consistent opportunity for individuals facing various mental health challenges to unite for the purpose of mutual peer support.
One of the most significant benefits of our peer-led environment is the sense of safety and comfort it provides. We have found that members feel significantly more at ease discussing their personal journeys when they are surrounded by others who truly understand their perspective. Within this confidential space, it is common for members to offer practical suggestions based on how they successfully navigated similar hurdles in their own lives. However, we also recognise that for many, simply having the chance to be heard can be a powerful tool in reducing the heavy sense of isolation that often accompanies mental ill health.
Our weekly gatherings are open to anyone struggling with their mental wellbeing, and we do not require a formal medical diagnosis or active involvement with clinical services to participate. Furthermore, we strongly believe in supporting the wider network, which is why all our meetings are open to families and carers who are also affected by these challenges. To keep our community vibrant and connected beyond the structured meetings, we also organise a regular schedule of social outings and events.
To ensure our services remain accessible to everyone, we utilise a hybrid meeting schedule. On the first Thursday of every month, we host face-to-face sessions between 6:00pm and 7:30pm. For all subsequent Thursdays in the month, we transition to digital meetings via Zoom, which take place from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. If you are interested in learning more about how the group operates or would like to programme yourself into our regular newsletter for updates, please get in touch by sending us an email or a direct message.
