The Positive Behaviour, Autism, Learning Disability, and Mental Health Service, known as PALMS, offers dedicated, multidisciplinary support for children and young people aged 0-18 in Hertfordshire. We specialise in assisting those with a global learning disability and/or an autistic spectrum disorder, along with their families. Our team of PALMS clinicians operates as a unified, "virtual" service, delivering consistent care across various community settings throughout Hertfordshire. We're committed to providing tailored support to help families manage the diverse challenges they face at home. Our core aim is to enable children and young people to remain with their families within Hertfordshire, ultimately improving outcomes for everyone involved.

At PALMS, we believe in a family-led approach. We recognise the significant impact that challenges can have on families of children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To address this, we work collaboratively with children, young people, their families, and other professionals. This close working relationship is fundamental to how PALMS operates. We focus on both prevention and intervention, striving to empower children and young people to achieve their ambitions and lead fulfilling, healthy, and happy lives. We actively encourage the involvement of children, young people, and their families and carers in the ongoing development of PALMS, ensuring our service is meaningful and beneficial for local communities across Hertfordshire.

Our duty team is available Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm, to respond to calls from families already registered with PALMS who may be experiencing an escalation of needs. We prioritise assessments and aim to conduct them within five working days. If a more urgent response is required, the PALMS duty team will liaise directly with the Children's Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (CCATT). You can reach PALMS by phone on 01727 582122. Alternatively, professionals and families are encouraged to contact us via email at hct.palms@nhs.net. Please note: We are unable to accept self-referrals directly from parents or carers. All referrals must be made by a professional.

Professionals can refer to PALMS through several channels. You can make a referral via the Electronic SystemOne within Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust, or through Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Trust's Single Point of Access Service. Another option is to complete a PALMS Referral Form or send a detailed letter to the PALMS Admin Team at Sandridge Gate Business Centre, Ronsons Way, St Albans, AL4 9XR. Alternatively, you can complete a PALMS Referral Form and email it directly to hct.palms@nhs.net. This service offers support in person and is proudly provided by the NHS.
