The Central Norfolk branch of the Intensive Older People's Service (IOPS) delivers assessments and therapeutic interventions to adults experiencing age-related needs. While focusing on older individuals, the service also caters to those grappling with acute, severe, or long-term mental health conditions. These include, but are not limited to, anxiety, depression, psychosis, states of confusion, dementia (at any age), and related behavioural challenges.

All urgent and emergency referrals must go through the Single Point of Access Team. Additionally, care coordinators are able to refer individuals who are already being supported by existing community teams.

The Intensive Older People's Service (IOPS) Central Norfolk team is available daily, from 7:50 AM to 9:00 PM. You can reach the reception at 01603 978380; please note this is not a referral line. This NHS service provides face-to-face support.

Accessing services like the Intensive Older People's Service (IOPS) can significantly improve mental health by offering specialised, tailored support. Often, mental health challenges in older age, such as depression, anxiety, or the early stages of dementia, can be compounded by isolation, physical health issues, or the stress of life transitions. The IOPS addresses this by providing dedicated assessments, allowing for a precise understanding of an individual's unique needs and guiding the most effective interventions.

These interventions are crucial. They can include psychological therapies that help individuals develop coping strategies, manage symptoms, and reframe negative thought patterns. For those experiencing confusion or dementia, the service can offer cognitive stimulation and support for families to better understand and manage behavioural changes, reducing distress for everyone involved. Prompt access to such care, facilitated by emergency and urgent referral pathways, means that individuals in crisis receive timely support, preventing conditions from escalating and potentially averting unnecessary hospital admissions.

Furthermore, being connected to a dedicated team, rather than navigating complex services alone, fosters a sense of security and reduces the burden often felt by individuals and their families. The long operating hours and in-person support underscore a commitment to accessibility and building therapeutic relationships. This consistent, empathetic care helps individuals regain a sense of control, improve their overall well-being, and enhance their ability to engage with daily life, ultimately leading to a better quality of life and fostering resilience in the face of mental health challenges.
