Providing comprehensive inpatient support, the Coborn Centre for Adolescent Mental Health offers a dedicated service for young individuals grappling with severe and intricate mental health challenges. Our expertise lies in caring for adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age. A key aspect of our approach has been the active involvement of young people themselves in shaping the environment, resulting in a vibrant, welcoming, and youth-centric space.

We recognise that hospital admission can be an inherently difficult period for both the young person and their family or carers. Therefore, our unwavering commitment is to deliver the highest standard of age-appropriate therapeutic interventions. The centre boasts an array of facilities designed to meet diverse needs, including 12 acute beds for immediate care and 16 specialised psychiatric intensive care beds for those requiring a higher level of support. Additionally, we provide six day service placements, enabling young people to benefit from our therapeutic programmes during the day while returning to the comfort of their own homes in the evenings.

Our comprehensive multidisciplinary team comprises a wide range of specialists, including doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, family therapists, art and drama therapists, social workers, a fitness instructor, and a dietician. This diverse expertise allows us to offer a holistic approach to assessment and treatment, crafting individualised care plans for each young person. We provide a broad spectrum of interventions, from highly specialised psychiatric assessments and treatment to individual therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mentalisation, Occupational Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, and various creative therapies. A rich therapeutic group programme further supports young people with sessions on psychoeducation, healthy lifestyles, social skills, and recreational activities. Systemic and family therapy, alongside parenting support, are also integral to our service.

Education is paramount, and our on-site provision, managed by Newham Education, offers a wide range of subjects tailored to different abilities. Our teaching staff work closely with each young person's own school or college, with the ultimate goal of successfully reintegrating them back into community education upon discharge. Effective liaison, discharge planning, and aftercare, in collaboration with community CAMHS teams and other agencies such as Social Care and Youth Offending Teams, begin from the moment of admission, ensuring a seamless transition and ongoing support. While referrals are typically made via community CAMHS teams, emergency services can also make referrals if a young person is in crisis.
